They stem from the values of a agricultural economy in which status and lineage matter more than wealth. There was more mobility possible in the urban setting of later Rome (with "new men" like Cicero able to join the senatorial class) but you see the same pattern with the medieval aristocracy which were all landowning-based.<br /><br />The other thing that is interesting is the capriciousness of the gods. Unlike that later Christian view for the ancients thee world was absolutely alive with gods and demons.
